I was somewhere along the northern Oregon Coast when I took this photo, but I couldn’t tell you exactly where. The tide pool was full of birds. The waves were splashing on the coastline. The sunset was quickly growing softer and more colorful. I sat on the side of this tide pool for maybe twenty minutes trying to photograph the birds that were playing in the water until I realized that was ridiculous.
Frozen Winter Pond at the Farmhouse
I’ve had my eye on this spot for a while and I’ll probably return here again. I was waiting for either an overcast day or a perfect sunset to go and make a photo. I need to make an image here to hang in someone’s home. My vision for the photo they want is with the pond, the row of …
Storm Over the Sahara
I had been in this spot for maybe fifteen minutes waiting for the clouds to cover the sun. Our guide with Open Doors Morocco came up behind me and said, “We need to go. That storm is going to be on us in 10 minutes.” So the light wasn’t exactly where I wanted it but this was the best frame …
Lizard Lake in Marble Colorado
Let’s imagine for a minute that we don’t only visit a location to make a photo for our social feed and we can just enjoy the world as it unfolds in front of us. I was on my way to Crystal Mill and I would spend half a day making different images there. But on my way to Crystal Mill …
Buffalo Bill Reservoir Wyoming
I was in Wyoming to view the Solar Eclipse in 2017. My brother in law loves to photograph anything in the sky and he did come away with a really cool series of photos. I spent an evening putting together this panorama with his frames in photoshop while enjoying a bottle of rum with him if I remember correctly. My …
Lone Argan Tree
This lone Argan Tree was somewhere in the desert of Southern Morocco. I was crossing the country scouting a bike tour and this spot captured my attention. I wrote an article about creating photo versions for designers with more detail about why I ended up with this particular edit. I always add the map to these posts so you can go …
Ice or Surf Ambiguous Photography
Is it Ice or is it Surf? I like photos that make you look twice to figure out what you’re looking at. I’m not sure if this image fully accomplishes that, but that’s what I was going for at the time. There was a period where I only took these kind of photos. I was stuck in a rut only …
Snowy Pasture
This snowy pasture is close to where I live. I drive past and ride my bike past this spot regularly and think nothing of it. But when we get a fresh snow I’ll go out early to see if there are some interesting photos to be made. I practice photography mostly when I travel and the sites around me every …
Rolling Green Olive Orchards of Morocco
Northern Morocco is carpeted with olive orchards everywhere. For about half the year, they look like this. I was expecting the whole country to look like a desert punctuated by some mountains so this was a surprising sight. The next time I visit Morocco for a cycling vacation I’ll plan it during the spring so we get this lush green …
Moonrise
This moonrise over Mount Sopris is a rare sight in Colorado. Yes, the moon does rise every day. We are on planet earth and all those cycles are consistent here. We rarely see a sunset and moonrise cycle with a completely cloudless sky. That’s especially true in the mountains of Colorado. This is one of our location stops on the …
Sahara Sunrise
Just about every image I see of the sand dunes in the Sahara is in black and white. A Sahara sunrise is anything but black and white. It’s very colorful. It’s also cold, but that’s the part I choose not to remember. One of my guides in Fes even made sure to tell me that all I had to do …
Almost Oregon
To me this is Almost Oregon because it reminds me of the rivers and greenery that you would see along a river in Oregon. This is actually along the hike to Hanging Lake in Colorado. We don’t have a lot of rivers flowing beside trees covered in moss in Colorado. In fact; half of the state of Colorado is a …
