McWay Falls in the Fog

In Landscape by Kevin WenningLeave a Comment

On my third and final attempt to find some interesting light at McWay Falls I was greeted with heavy fog. I had been here the night before to catch golden hour and there was also heavy cloud cover. It’s an intriguing spot during daylight hours but even with that inviting ribbon waterfall I wanted something more magical. The idea was to …

Foggy Winter Morning

In Artistic Photography, Landscape, Seasons by Kevin WenningLeave a Comment

With any luck, I get one photo like this a year. Where I live, the weather conditions rarely bring fog so when I see it I’m inclined to go out looking to make moody images. Young kids in my household have me up and out of the house early every morning anyway. The question is whether or not the fog will hang around long enough for me to get out and make a few dozen frames after taking care of morning family duties.

Frozen Winter Pond at the Farmhouse

In Black and White, Landscape, Lost In Nature, Seasons by Kevin WenningLeave a Comment

I’ve had my eye on this spot for a while and I’ll probably return here again. I was waiting for either an overcast day or a perfect sunset to go and make a photo. I need to make an image here to hang in someone’s home. My vision for the photo they want is with the pond, the row of …

Storm Over the Sahara

In Landscape, Lost In Nature, Worldwide Butter by Kevin WenningLeave a Comment

I had been in this spot for maybe fifteen minutes waiting for the clouds to cover the sun. Our guide with Open Doors Morocco came up behind me and said, “We need to go. That storm is going to be on us in 10 minutes.” So the light wasn’t exactly where I wanted it but this was the best frame …

Lizard Lake in Marble Colorado

In Landscape, Lost In Nature, Seasons by Kevin Wenning2 Comments

Let’s imagine for a minute that we don’t only visit a location to make a photo for our social feed and we can just enjoy the world as it unfolds in front of us. I was on my way to Crystal Mill and I would spend half a day making different images there. But on my way to Crystal Mill …

Buffalo Bill Reservoir Wyoming

In Artistic Photography, Landscape, Lost In Nature by Kevin WenningLeave a Comment

I was in Wyoming to view the Solar Eclipse in 2017. My brother in law loves to photograph anything in the sky and he did come away with a really cool series of photos. I spent an evening putting together this panorama with his frames in photoshop while enjoying a bottle of rum with him if I remember correctly. My best …

Lone Argan Tree

In Artistic Photography, Landscape, Lost In Nature by Kevin WenningLeave a Comment

This lone Argan Tree was somewhere in the desert of Southern Morocco. I was crossing the country scouting a bike tour and this spot captured my attention. I wrote an article about creating photo versions for designers with more detail about why I ended up with this particular edit. I always add the map to these posts so you can go …

Snowy Pasture

In Landscape, Lost In Nature, Seasons by Kevin WenningLeave a Comment

This snowy pasture is close to where I live. I drive past and ride my bike past this spot regularly and think nothing of it. But when we get a fresh snow I’ll go out early to see if there are some interesting photos to be made. I practice photography mostly when I travel and the sites around me every …

Rolling Green Olive Orchards of Morocco

In Artistic Photography, Landscape, Lost In Nature, Worldwide Butter by Kevin WenningLeave a Comment

Northern Morocco is carpeted with olive orchards everywhere. For about half the year, they look like this. I was expecting the whole country to look like a desert punctuated by some mountains so this was a surprising sight. The next time I visit Morocco for a cycling vacation I’ll plan it during the spring so we get this lush green …

Moonrise

In Artistic Photography, Black and White, Landscape, Lost In Nature by Kevin WenningLeave a Comment

This moonrise over Mount Sopris is a rare sight in Colorado. Yes, the moon does rise every day. We are on planet earth and all those cycles are consistent here. We rarely see a sunset and moonrise cycle with a completely cloudless sky. That’s especially true in the mountains of Colorado. This is one of our location stops on the …

Sahara Sunrise

In Landscape, Lost In Nature, Worldwide Butter by Kevin WenningLeave a Comment

Just about every image I see of the sand dunes in the Sahara is in black and white. A Sahara sunrise is anything but black and white. It’s very colorful. It’s also cold, but that’s the part I choose not to remember. One of my guides in Fes even made sure to tell me that all I had to do …

Mount Sopris in Summer

In Landscape, Lost In Nature by Kevin WenningLeave a Comment

Mount Sopris is a new find for me. I don’t live in this part of the state but this spot jumped out to me on Google maps when researching routes for a Colorado bike tour. The side of the mountain is covered with Aspen trees so the slopes of the mountain will be lit up with bright oranges, reds and …
